If anyone is expecting modern media to report on how modern media is censoring valid critique of modern media… Yeah that’s never happening.

I’m not saying traditional mainstream media is a million times better, we know they aren’t.

But it’s clear with social media that hiding uncomfortable truths about how their systems operate is just business as usual. In other words, expect “getting the message out” about any specific issue to get a lot more difficult as the pro-Trump social media police come out.

Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Xitter, and Reddit aren’t and never were arbiters of truth or genuine places for unbiased uncensored discussion. (This also goes for Bluesky even tho some don’t like to hear it)

Also, moderation is not the same as censorship and it is clear that what these giant companies do has more to do with censorship than moderation. They use the thin veneer of the idea of moderation as a shield for these kind of actions.

Hear, hear, especially about Bluesky. It’s just as doomed as Twitter. I except it will collapse more quickly than Twitter did now that a playbook is established.

I had an epiphany about this actually.

Bluesky’s business model is exponential growth, just like all the others, right?

All of them grow fast until they are so big that all their moderation tools stop working and then they say “Oops we are too big to manage all the racism and hate.”

Since Bluesky is built on the same growth model, they too will hit a point of no return where their mod tools can’t keep up with the deluge of spammy bullshit.

Mark my words, if growth for the sake of growth is the plan, it will inevitably happen.

Me too, it literally gives the devs time to manage the growth and develop new tools to manage growth.

The explosive growth is literally the ideology of a cancer cell.

Being a federated platform also gives admins of each instance control over how big they get and how fast. It also means that if someone goes wild and opens an instance to bots/Nazis in mass they will be de-federated by most instances cutting off the damage they can do.

There are some people that are so comfortable and smug about the rising fascism that whether they mean to or not they sound really into fascism.

You’re still in their ecosystem and they read your messages and probably are training their LLMs on them, probably.

I wish I could stop, but my small family is spread out all over the globe and I just have no other way to stay in touch with them. This includes my brother, who seems to want to communicate with the family via Facebook.

That is the main reason I still have an account but I seldom use it for anything other than messanger… I was planning on deleting my facebook account and make a new one but that plan changed.

What do you mean? They’re literally restricting random link clickers from reading their articles

Oh, I’d also say that 404 media deserves to burn down for being dicks

Yeah, not really clearing up the point you’re trying to make.

And showing that you obviously got an axe to grind with quite well regarded journalists sure is… a strategy…

If you were determined to read this article for free, I’m certain there is a way.

That being said, I don’t think the issue here is with 404 Media. The majority of news sites operate this way - if people are given the option to donate, 99.9% of them just won’t. Whoever is researching and writing these articles (a team of 4 people by the sounds of it) likely need to eat and pay rent. Personally I feel better about not paying for something like NYT or Washington Post than I do for a smaller and apparently less corrupt site like 404.

This is a free article. They require an account on the site to read even the free articles, and that’s just plain bullshit
