Aiming for a 10 year life-cycle for smartphones

After a one and a half year selection process, the new name of the operating system formerly known postmarketOS has been announced during the mystery talk of our very own conference. From now on this project is known as Nura!

Nura comes as an abbreviation of Nuraghe, which are ancient (3000 BC and older) granite structures found in Sardinia in Italy, many of which still stand today. The deeper meaning is the stability and the resistance to millenniums, which fits well with the our project as the idea has been from the start to keep devices our OS runs on useful for a long time. The name was contributed by Davide Depau as part of our initial request for community contributions for the new name. Thanks a lot Davide!

    Pretty weird logic. The previous name was a literal description of the project, the new one is way more vague. I seriously doubt anyone will understand what it is based on an abbreviation of literal ancient history.

      No, they said the old name was descriptive and limiting the scope of the project, hence the new name that is not descriptive but also not limited.

      Just like crDroid is one of the most customizable Android ROMs ever, the name doesn’t say it but it’s still simple I’m gonna remember.

      That said, I have no idea what “postmarket” means.

        it is an “after you buy the system from the market” operating system. Its not the one that came on it from the market.

        You’re correct, I completely misread that. I wonder why they didn’t go with NuraOS/Nura OS, though? It is a fairly standardised naming format that would make it immediately clear, regardless of context, that the thing being discussed was an operating system.
