Surely hardware manufacturers could be embedding AV2 starting this year? The spec has just been officially finalized, but it’s been pretty close for years; enough to figure out the hardware design for it.

I’d really like to see Apple, for instance, switch from HEVC to AV2. Less patent encumbrance, better algorithms, and they’re a member of both orgs.

AV1 didn’t even get major traction yet. Is AV2 really needed so early?
