Sure it hardens your device against Wi-Fi eavesdropping. But you are still vulnerable to DNS spoofing session hijacking cache poisoning and SSL stripping. Aka a VPN won’t protect you from man in the middle attacks once you’ve entered a site app or network under someone else’s control.
