  • Pick a different subject to talk about Harris vs. Trump votes. There are arguments with a lot of merit, but this isn’t one them. Like the Palestinians said, it’s already hell. A hell of destroyed hospitals, schools and housing, of war crimes like murdered children, manufactured famine, rape, and torture…all with complete support from a Democrat President and large parts of his party.

Trump is going to create a lot of ruin if he accomplishes 10% of what he promises, but with the story being Trump’s approach to Gaza, stop pretending as if Biden has done better or Kamala would. On that issue it’s not as if either candidate would have done fuck all about Gaza other than continue to support the ethnic cleansing. There’s a reason Biden will be remembered as Genocide Joe. He repeatedly, explicitly affirmed the USA’s COMPLETE support of Israel and acted in accordance with that. He did nothing when Israel crossed “red lines” except provide Israel with more weapons and money. At least we’re spared the torturous, blatant hypocrisy of “we’re committed to peace” on the same week billions in arms deals are signed.

Let me head off rebuttals that amount to “but at least Harris might have tried”. She also explicitly confirmed continued support for Israel, and offered zero credible objections to blank cheque support as VP. The only thing the world could have expected from her were more “serious concerns” speeches.

Edit: And I don’t give even the slightest damn about downvotes. Both Dems and Republicans are HORRIFIC regarding this war, which has met the standard for genocide and is riddled with war crimes. I’m not going to shut up about it or pretend Harris would have been better because of popularity. Asking if protest voters feel stupid because Trump says it’s going to be hell is a resounding no, because people are right in saying it’s been that for over a year. America’s policy was already incredibly evil with no change even hinted at from Kamala and more of the same promised. And no, I’m not a protest voter (I’m Canadian and told people to vote Harris anyways because I agreed with Bernie Sanders), I’m not Russian, or Israeli, or a fascist, or a communist, or a bot.

  • I’ve been online since the days of dial-up, and even places like 4chan had containment boards specifically set aside for jackasses. If you went to one of those you knew what you were getting into. Not that you wouldn’t find it on other boards, but the content elsewhere was mostly memes, life stories, cooking, vidya, shock content and so on. You could always find stupidity and hatred, but it’s way more common now in terms of # of people posting. With the removal of moderation Facebook is set to become the new /pol/ but sitewide.

  • Trudeau wasn’t terrible, but he wasn’t going to win again. I only voted Liberal once (otherwise NDP who are center-left to left). I did so because Trudeau promised to get rid of first-past-the-post elections, and when that didn’t happen they lost me. My take on his time as leader is that he was decent during hard times. Not great, not terrible - life got harder as Canadians but we fared better than a lot of countries.

I’d much rather have him than the MAGA-lite conservative government which I fear my nation is headed for. My right-wing family members seem to share very similar faults to MAGA. I really don’t want Americans to get fucked by Trump and his reality-show appointees, but it looks like that’s what the US is headed for regardless of my wishes. I can only hope that our undecideds look at the mess the US Republicans are already and move away from voting in that mindset here.

BTW, Trump responding by continuing to call Canada as the 51st state and referring to our office of Prime Minister as the “governor of Canada” is shit behaviour and likely to burn through some goodwill. I know the folks reading this have no control over that clown, but I’m not looking forward to getting that attitude from the bloc of voters that parrot his verbal diarrhea.

“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social. “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” Fuck right off you spray-painted felon sex offender.

  • A lot of people did in fact set aside Gaza until Trump was stopped. As for those that didn’t, they should have listened to Bernie Sanders. I did months ago and went all-in on Dem support. There were multiple times when I wrote up an angry post about US support of Israel and then didn’t post it because I didn’t want to turn a voter into a non-voter or worse a Trump supporter.

I understand their position of never rewarding ethnic cleansing and war crimes though. They chose to make sure the Dems know they would never “settle” for the illegal killing of civilians. The support for Israel made it especially hard for Arab Americans to vote Dem. It’s difficult to support a party that has been in power during the whole conflict yet gives unconditional support for the internationally condemned murder of Arabs.

I’m sure a lot also felt disenfranchised by the bipartisan protest suppression and condemnation. Even in Dem states peaceful protesters were punished, and sometimes pro-Israeli protesters who attacked got away with it. Then there was the whole “vote with us or else” pressure that went on for months. Dissenters like the “uncommitted” voters were insulted by the party that wanted their unconditional support.

So it’s not like it’s completely insane. But as Sanders points out that position only makes things worse and has done so.
