  • My understanding is the most benefit is to children whose teeth are still growing, then secondarily to adults who have substandard dental hygiene. An otherwise healthy adult with good dental care routines is the least impactful case.

Going off on the tangent of distilled water: distilled water can reduce overall minerals in the diet. From WebMD https://www.webmd.com/diet/distilled-water-overview

Distilled water lacks even electrolytes like potassium and other minerals your body needs. So you may miss out on a bit of these micronutrients if you drink only the distilled stuff. Some studies have found a link between drinking water low in calcium and magnesium and tiredness, muscle cramps, weakness, and heart disease

  • I think the foothold thought was that pasteurization destroys more than just bacteria, and milk might be healthier and/or tastier without having been changed by that process. Of course taste is largely culturally acquired - example A being Germans and UHT milk - but lots of people fancy themselves taste-o-philes.

Then the mistrust of “them” kicked in, and if “they” said the risk of pathogenic bacteria far outweighed any marginal health benefit, the “truth” must be the opposite.

  • In some takes on the trolley problem (do nothing, five people are run over by a trolley an die, flip a track change switch and two people are run over by a trolley and die) flipping the switch is the morally worse option because then those two people’s deaths are your fault, whereas the five people who die because you did nothing are someone else’s fault. I don’t agree with that take, but it’s taken seriously in philosophy circles.
