  • Star Trek also operates in a non-scarcity environment and eliminates the necessity of hard, pretty non-rewarding labor through either not showing it or writing (like putting holograms into mines instead of people, or using some sci-fi tech that makes mining comfy as long as said tech doesn’t kill you).

Even without capitalism the term “life is expensive” still stands not in regards to money, but effort that has to be put into stuff that doesn’t wield any emotional reward (you can feel emotionally rewarded in many ways, but some stuff is just shit for a long time). Every person who suffered through depression is gonna tell you that, to feel enticed to do something, there has to be some emotional reward connected to it (one of the things depression elimates), and it’s a mathematical fact that not everyone who’d start scrubbing tubes on a starship could eventually get into high positions since there simply aren’t that many of those. The emotional gains have to offset the cost you put into it.

Of course cutthroat capitalism is shit and I love Star Trek, but what it shows doesn’t make too much sense either economically or socially.

  • Europe won’t do a thing with these initiatives, at least not in any official manner (what they can do though is to ensure EU web hosters of this stuff aren’t feeling the pressure). They’ve enough to do restructuring their economy and military, all the while also dealing with war and fascism from the east. They won’t risk Trump having another tamper tantrum, at least not before the EU and its allies are widely decoupled from the US economy.

  • Yep, elitism is a huge problem. It’s usually the best for newcomers to refer them to only certain subsections of the wider community (for example Linux Mint forums) who you know to be very friendly and humane. Many other places are a cesspit, and don’t you dare criticize something technical. You’ll get at least 30% answers trying to shut you up.

In terms of the wider Fediverse, people seem unable to understand how many people won’t even know you can use third-party software with certain services so not finding a native, official “Lemmy” app in the app store is a dealbreaker for them. Hell, our digital education and modern mobile devices are so bad & manipulative at times people don’t even know that “gmail” and “email” are the same… but of course that’ll be blamed on literally everyone else. Can’t be that that FOSS Bros are out of touch or something. Contributing to a social & economical solution is hard, let’s go back to our code cave.

  • It’s not perfectly correct indeed, gender dysphoria isn’t classified as mental disorder anymore with the DSM-V and ICD-11 as it doesn’t fit the bill (according to decades of science). It’s more of an in-congruence between brain structure and hormone chemistry (as well as the whole rest of the body), and this mismatch causing very subtle but sometimes intense suffering (which in turn CAN cause mental illness, obviously). This mismatch most likely is due to some hormone control mechanism during pregnancy not doing its thing as intended.

Given he gets the important points I wouldn’t try to correct him too much on that. He even demands something that’s basically part of the normal process: before receiving treatment that causes irreversible changes (hormones) there’s ALWAYS therapy and analysis involved. The only exception to this may be temporary hormone blockers, as those do not cause irreversible harm but give both the person and their therapist time to sort things out and find the correct answer.

(In case anyone wonders: No, we do not have a comprehensive way to tell anything conclusive from an MRI scan… yet)
