I guess I didn’t exactly mean it as elitist gatekeeping, I see it more like people are being abandoned by major websites and this is the result.

Welcome to the old Internet. Decentralization is good in a way, people will have to try harder instead of having everything spoon fed to them by Google.
The two biggest ones I know of are startrek.website for trekkies and blahaj for all things trans/lgbtq. But even those don’t see to have much activity. We need better advertisement to smaller communities somehow.
I felt like it was working briefly on my instance and now it’s not again…
Just checked the issues and I don’t see anything about context for the latest version. I think the devs are unaware.
There’s a script for instance operators to run to fix that but I don’t have the link on me
I had similar issues, I joined a small Mastodon instance and for some reason couldn’t see comments or amounts of boosts. I guess it was just misconfigured
Please just let me go to my local CVS and get this. I’ve considered trying to trick a vet into giving me the one they give dogs (that was originally developed and used for humans but taken off the market for total bullshit reasons) but easier said than done.
It is confusing, Tor is an excellent privacy tool if used properly (don’t log in to stuff), but I guess it’s still a technical hurdle to most. Probably also from a lack of marketing.
I think in countries where the government is decidedly more authoritarian it’s more known. On my relay right now I see a ton of russian and a smaller amount of German connections.
Those onion layers don’t add up to nothing… also I’ve heard it’s under constant attack. Plus not enough people running relays and exit nodes.
Just download Tor browser and go to Lemmy. World
What country? Sounds like a kangaroo court or a court staffed entirely by old people.
A cloud host can just take a live snapshot which defeats this
Because otherwise Lemmy will die from lack of interest, it’s too small at the moment.
The type of people that inhabit these instances will never ever agree to a no-moderation type of setup. That’s what true decentralization means, right?
Cloud flare’s business is protecting small websites as well as large across the world from DDOS attacks. You don’t think there’s a tier somewhere between “free” and “enterprise 20k base”? DDOS mitigation techniques have gotten pretty advanced and are no longer the sole domain of large companies.
Tor
is largely plain text
Lol maybe do the barest amount of researching before commenting on something you know nothing about?
Kind of crazy how unsympathetic people are being towards Tor and Tor operators here
This is a great idea, I love it. Keep going!
I recall the biggest direct air capture facility ever made in like, Norway?, only being able to capture about a few seconds worth of our yearly carbon output lol
