Really? Turned them off a long time ago, never seen it changing (checked now too just in case)

Have you tried Fennec?
Use a fork of Firefox that doesn’t do that. For example, Ironfox
LibreWolf and FireFoxFocus.
Zen browser is pretty interesting too
