Klassik brings the KDE 3 desktop to Plasma 6: reimplemented panel applets, the KDE 2/3 application style, ports of the KWin window decorations, and the original color schemes and wallpapers, with Wayland support.

FIrst they brought Oxygen back and now this. A very nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Nope, it’t not beginning of April…
Best DE I ever used was KDE 3.5
There’s also https://www.trinitydesktop.org/ which is a fork of KDE 3.5 still being maintained.
I hated this look at the time. I was wrong.
Why? Plasma was rough around v4 if I remember correctly but it’s great now.
I too don’t get it, but some people love it, and who are we to stop them? Linux is for everyone!
Omarchay disagrees in the weirdest possible way, which is why you got my updoot
Why not? it’s a separate project and something entirely optional for anyone who wants
Yes but no. I ask myself on any Linux package “does this solve a problem?”
Sure does, it solves several problems in one go, even.
- My desktop looks to modern.
- My desktop isn’t nostalgic enough.
- My Plasma doesn’t look exactly like v3.
most of them neither involve you, or as in this case, concern you
That’s was weirdly aggressive. I’m trying to understand motive and you respond with dismissal, which means you either considered the inquiry an attack or that this project is actually dumb and that is not a satisfying answer.
Instead of chasing the dismissal and turning this into an internet slap fight among the most limp-wristed on Lemmy, let’s get back to my question: why do this?
Does this solve a UX issue? Is there some incredible performance advantage? Does it solve a problem? Is it an interesting technical challenge where something shouldn’t be possible but a neurodivergent paused his Minecraft videos and said hold my beer unconvincingly? Why was this done? Help me tune into what makes this impressive.
Because they wanted to and some people may use it.
It solves the problem of having nostalgia for KDE 3.5, along with the problem of being curious about what KDE used to look like some time ago
